Energy is everything.
In my work, whether it’s running events, filming videos, connecting with clients, or building relationships; energy is what I bring to the table every single day.
And as you know, keeping that energy consistent isn’t always easy.
Over the past year, I’ve been learning more about how to balance high-energy seasons with intentional rest.
Two practices have made a huge difference for me: retreats and periodisation.
Retreats: More Than Just a Break
A retreat isn’t a holiday. Holidays often bring exploration, stimulation, and activity which can be wonderful, but not always restful.
A retreat is different.
For me, it’s 2–3 days during the week spent somewhere that restores me.
Often it’s Raglan or Waihe. Places with beaches, forests, or views that shift my perspective.
I book a cozy spot, take along my favorite food and coffee,
And create space to simply be.
Sometimes I just rest. Other times, I do deep work.
Tackling big projects without distractions.
Either way, the change of environment gives me clarity, energy, and calm.
Periodisation: Borrowing from Athletes
The second practice is periodisation. A concept I first noticed from athletes.
The idea is simple:
Go all-in for a stretch (4–6 weeks of high energy, high output).
Then pull back for a week or two with lower demands and more recovery.
This rhythm has helped me tremendously, especially as my work has become less predictable and more varied.
For example, this week is school holidays. We’d planned a trip to Wellington, but instead we chose a staycation and still a little bit of work, but with a softer pace and lower impact.
It’s a conscious choice to rest while staying engaged.
Why This Matters
If you’re naturally high-energy, it’s tempting to always push harder. But real sustainability comes from rhythm.
Building in moments of intentional rest alongside your sprints of productivity.
For me, retreats and periodisation aren’t luxuries.
They’re essential strategies to keep showing up with energy, creativity, and focus.
A Gentle Invitation
When was the last time you gave yourself permission to slow down?
Maybe it’s a retreat. Maybe it’s your own version of periodisation. Or maybe it’s something completely different.
I’d love to hear: how do you build rest and recovery into your life?
And in the meantime, enjoy your coffee, and enjoy your week.
